A specification sheet is a list of decisions. Each line records a choice the manufacturer made, usually a compromise between cost, size, heat and battery life, and those compromises are what you are actually buying. Reading the sheet well means asking what each number describes, how it was measured, and whether you would ever notice the difference.
The sheet describes decisions, not experiences
Two phones with identical sheets can feel nothing alike, because a specification rarely captures the parts of daily use that annoy people: how warm the device gets under load, how quickly the software responds after a year of updates, how often the camera produces a usable photo indoors. The sheet is a filter for ruling options out, not a prediction of how much you will like the result.
The display: four numbers that matter
Size is the diagonal, so it tells you nothing about whether the phone fits your hand. A tall, narrow phone with the same diagonal as a short, wide one is easier to hold and harder to type on. Compare the width and the weight, if the manufacturer publishes them.
Resolution is usually quoted as a pixel count. Beyond roughly 400 pixels per inch, the difference at normal viewing distance is small, and a higher number costs battery life. On most phones sold today resolution is the least interesting display figure.
Refresh rate describes how many times per second the screen redraws. A higher rate makes scrolling and animation look smoother, and it does drain more power, which is why many phones drop to a lower rate when nothing is moving. Look for whether the rate is variable rather than fixed.
Brightness is quoted differently by different manufacturers. A peak figure often applies to a small portion of the screen for a short time, which is not the same as the whole screen staying readable outdoors. Treat any single brightness number as a ceiling, not a typical value.
The processor: names, cores and sustained speed
Chip names are marketing labels, and the tiering changes every generation. What the name tells you is roughly where the part sits in the range; it does not tell you how the phone manages heat.
Core counts are also weak evidence. A design with fewer, faster cores can outperform one with more slow cores in the short burst of work a phone mostly does — opening an app, processing a photo, rendering a page.
The figure that is almost never published but matters most is sustained performance: how fast the phone still runs after ten minutes of a demanding task, once the chassis has warmed up. Reviews that measure repeated runs will tell you, and the spec sheet will not.
Memory and storage
Memory, listed as RAM, decides how many apps stay open in the background. Below a certain point, a phone starts reloading apps you switched away from a moment ago, and the ceiling has been rising steadily for years. Compare devices within the same price band and generation rather than against a number you remember from an older phone.
Storage is quoted as total capacity, but the usable figure is smaller, and it shrinks with system updates. If the device has no expansion slot, the storage tier you choose at purchase is the one you live with. This is where paying for headroom usually costs less than regretting it.
Cameras: megapixels are the least useful number
A megapixel count describes how many pixels a sensor can produce, not how much light each one collects. Two sensors with the same count can differ substantially in how they handle a dim room, because the physical size of the sensor and the size of each pixel matter more.
Aperture, written as an f-number, describes how much light the lens admits. A lower number means more light, which helps indoors and at night, though a wider aperture also makes it harder to keep the whole frame in focus.
Optical stabilisation reduces blur from hand movement. In low light it often makes a bigger difference to a usable photo than a small change in resolution.
What the sheet cannot describe is software: how aggressively a phone merges multiple frames, smooths skin, sharpens edges and decides what a night scene should look like. Two phones with similar sheets routinely produce very different photographs, and that difference is decided in code, not in the sensor.
Battery: capacity is a tank, efficiency is the engine
Capacity is quoted in milliampere-hours or watt-hours. It is a measure of the tank, not the range. A phone with a larger tank and an inefficient screen can last less time than one with a smaller tank and a more efficient chip.
Charging speed is usually quoted as a peak. A phone may reach its highest rate only when nearly empty, only with a particular charger, and only while it is cool. Look for how long a partial charge takes in practice rather than the peak figure.
Charge cycles are the number of full discharges a battery is rated to survive before its capacity falls noticeably. Where a manufacturer publishes a cycle rating, it is a rough statement about how long the battery will stay useful, and it is one of the more honest numbers on the sheet.
Connectivity: the lines that quietly matter
Network band support decides which carriers and regions the phone works with, and it is easy to overlook when buying across borders.
Wi-Fi generation tells you how the device behaves on a busy network, and whether it can use the higher bands your router offers.
The USB port has a version number, and it is often the slowest available. If you move large video files or use the phone as a display output, this line matters far more than the processor name.
Software support: the number that decides how long you keep it
Security update commitments and full operating system version upgrades are usually published as a number of years. This is the line that decides how long the device stays safe and useful, and it is frequently more valuable than any performance figure. A phone with a slightly slower chip and a long support window will outlast one with a faster chip and a short window.
What the sheet leaves out
Not on the sheet: thermal behaviour, repairability, parts availability after the model is discontinued, how the software ages, how heavy the device feels, and whether an update will slow it down. Those belong to the documentation and the reviews, not the marketing page. Read the sheet to narrow the field, then decide with the things it cannot measure.
